It’s so easy with work, life obligations, stuff to do, home errands and tax preparation etc to find yourself too busy to do the important things in life…like visiting family. So Kelsey and I carved out a few days last weekend to make our way to Destin, Florida – where my folks spend a few months every winter to get out of the Michigan cold. With never-ending physical challenges that come with aging, as well as the COPD my mother has from years of smoking (and yes, even cigarettes that are secretly smoked in the backyard contribute equally to those that were smoked in the social settings of the 70’s and 80’s), has made each of these winter journeys more of a challenge but sitting in Michigan, right on the famous lake, simply maximizing the lake effect snow that starts in November is tough at their age as well.
Having lost the battle to not have my father make the 2 day drive, I always breath a sigh of relief (for them and everyone else on the road) when I get word that they have made it safely. It still made sense to bop down and make sure that all was going well and that they were able to make their way comfortably around and had the resources they need to spend a few months with more comfortable weather conditions.
From dragging my folks into photo booths, to having Kelsey take a few spins in the golf cart that is their car alternative much of the time, to simply enjoying the time together – the weekend was a reminder of the truly important things….family.
