Cyber Month….Are You Ready?

Cyber Month….Are You Ready?

The more I hear about cyber threats and the “spot on” but frightening adage that it’s not “if” but “when” you’ll be impacted by an attack, the more I am motivated to ensure that NTCA stays in front of our membership pushing cyber awareness. How appropriate that our upcoming Cybersecurity Summit will take place next week – smack in the middle of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The location is central, in Kansas City, in the early part of next week and…

Oh Give Me A Home….

Oh Give Me A Home….

It’s the last regional of the year as we kick off in Jackson, Wyoming this week.  We’re between seasons here in Jackson which means the room rates are hovering at $100 a night or about double the price of valet parking at a DC hotel, the streets are a tad quiet and the snow fell beautifully the other evening as I lugged my parka gladly around with me for this meeting.  In addition, NTCA member SilverStar Communications serves in the…

A Ton of Topics Covered at Fall Conference!

A Ton of Topics Covered at Fall Conference!

Just jumped on the NE Regional train heading back to DC after a few really excellent days in Philadelphia for NTCA’s Fall Conference.  A little tired but really pleased with the level of engagement from our membership, the full rooms for all of the sessions and the number of questions that were raised as folks pondered FCC activity, Capitol Hill advocacy, partnership possibilities, the role of fiber in 5G deployments, competitive workplace culture shifts, moving from a processing to selling…

Is This Heaven?

Is This Heaven?

Not quite, but it was a cloudy Iowa where NTCA just hosted our 4th regional meeting of the year.  Coralville has certainly “grown up” since the last time we were there and I appreciated all of the folks who spent several hours in their cars to make it to the meeting. It was a great opportunity to gather with our folks from the NE and Central regions and I even took a quick detour off of the highway to swing…

Got to Love Sioux Falls!

Got to Love Sioux Falls!

I am traveling back from the Regional Conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this week.  The location is ideal given the key leadership role that Senator Thune, local boy gone to Washington, has played in communications policy and his continued active engagement in meeting the challenge of rural broadband deployment.  One of the things I love about this region is that the turn-out is as strong as it is for our “more tropical” locations for these meetings in the Southeast….

Another Broken Toe, Another Regional Meeting….

Another Broken Toe, Another Regional Meeting….

Maybe I should have been blessed with more coordination, or maybe with smaller feet….either way, this past weekend saw me again knocking into something that was strong than my toes and another one of my phalanges has paid the price.  I know that phalange is the medical term for toe since I have now had more than enough reason over the past few years to do my internet research….. Thankfully, the trip to Phoenix for our Southwest Regional Conference was…

Capitol Hill is Busy, Chairman Thune Hits the Key Question

Capitol Hill is Busy, Chairman Thune Hits the Key Question

Given the need that our young (and youngest) generations have for broadband and speedy access and connectivity—for school, research, job searches and making our world a more global one for the next generation, it was fitting that Brent Christensen, the state executive for Minnesota Telecom Alliance and vice president of Christensen Communications Co., brought his grandson out to be part of the Minnesota lobbying crew that hit the Hill yesterday. Seriously, I am certain that this young gentleman had his own…

NTCA Regional Meetingpalooza Begins!

NTCA Regional Meetingpalooza Begins!

We have kicked off NTCA’s five Regional Conferences with a bang here in Florida with well over 300 NTCA members engaged in hearing, learning and sharing on a number of key industry topics.  Justin Foster kicked us off in fine style talking about Being a Human Brand in Small Town America and then engaged the group in noodling through the top challenges and opportunities that abound in rural America as broadband providers.  Managing change, trend watching, the double-edged sword of…

Broadband Access for Rural Americans is a Value Worth Celebrating

Broadband Access for Rural Americans is a Value Worth Celebrating

The Fourth of July holiday is quite the event in Washington, D.C.  I spent my first years living here making sure that I went to our national mall to celebrate the Folk Festival, listen to the National Symphony and watch the fireworks – very powerful and patriotic.  Then I moved off of Capitol Hill across the river to Virginia, had kids and was more in search of ways to keep things easy and limit the amount of production that went…

Be Smart

Be Smart

It’s that time of year again, when NTCA opens up our nomination process for our annual Smart Rural Community Showcase awards. Now entering our fifth year (wow…where does time fly off to??), this annual tradition of ours is a wonderful opportunity for NTCA members to be recognized for their extraordinary achievements in promoting rural broadband networks and their broadband-enabled applications in their rural communities. More than 40 NTCA member companies, and their communities, have been recognized with the Smart Rural…
