As we careen into the holiday season, it has been amazing to me the number of folks I have spoken or interacted with who are all in the same position – feeling like we are hurtling over the finish line of 2017 instead of easing into the holiday spirit. Maybe it’s the timing of the holidays, falling on Mondays, maybe it is simply that we have more and more to do and with (what feels like) less time in which to do them.
That is why is was such a nice break on the holiday front to receive a care package from NTCA Board President John Klatt. John is the President/CEO of Lakeland Communications in Wisconsin which serves the village of Luck, population 1,119 at the 2010 census. Established as two settlements, Luck on Big Butternut Lake and West Denmark further west, the two entities knew it wasn’t practical to continue to operate separately but as with all things political, could not find agreement on which would be the center of town until the railroad decided for them by laying their tracks near the eastern settlement. Luck won the discussion! Claim to fame? (Aside from Lakeland Communications in the neighborhood?), Luck was once home to the Duncan Toys Company Yo-Yo factory headquarters and now home of a museum.
A care package from Luck? A yo-yo (of course), some stories from Luck, a souvenir t-shirt and a fabulous hunk of Wisconsin cheese! What a fun way to start the week and at least put a smile on our collective faces as we continue the “pre-holiday hurtle!”
